I have wanted a big bookcase since we moved into our house. We had an empty wall that was screaming to have a giant bookcase that we could easily grab a book and sit with by the fire on a cold, rainy day. My search has been a long one to find the best bookcase in a price point that we could afford and nothing turned up. I was about to give up and try to come up with a new idea for that space when I discovered a pin on Pinterest of someone turning a hutch to a bookcase. It was not exactly the look I would have gone for, but it started the wheels turning in my head in how I could do something similar to get what I envisioned. So I started to search on Facebook marketplace for the best hutch I could find and sure enough I found it and it belonged to the sweetest elderly couple who were beyond thrilled to have it go to a good home.

So the project began. I was determined to do this by myself. I didn’t want any help from Chad (minus the heavy lifting part!) or any one else. I wanted this to be my project so I could have a sense of accomplishment in something new that I had never done before.
It is a solid wood, heavy piece. I started off by taking off the glass doors. I thought I would have to cut them out, but thankfully they were just screwed in at the top and bottom of the hutch. After taking the doors off, I needed to get wooden shelves to replace the glass ones that it came with. Lowe’s will cut wood for you so I didn’t have to worry about using the saw by myself. After that, I was good to sand, paint, paint, and paint some more. I used the Emerald Paint in color Black Magic by Sherwin Williams. I wish I could have spray painted the entire thing, but I know I would have inevitably messed it up some how. The paint was such good quality that I didn’t need a top coat. I put some new hardware on the cabinets at the bottom and then it was done. Such a fun project and it already has me itching to do another one soon.
